How do I Make a Claim on my Business Insurance?

When you make a business insurance policy claim you can usually do so through one or two methods, either through a telephone line or else going directly to the insurance company or bank of which provides you with your insurance. If you can gain some kind of a policy with a bank or larger corporation you should be able to save yourself time, or else perhaps even some money off, because these are the institutions that usually have the money to give you the best policy possible. Remember that not every company you deal with will accept a claim, and often this is to do with your premiums being late and other such unfortunate circumstances.

Telephone the Insurance Provider

When you first phone up the insurance provider you may be put through to an automated claims service, or else through to an adviser. If you deal with a smaller company you will usually get straight through to their customer service colleagues and have to answer a few questions, or else go straight through to the department of claims. If you have had any previous dealings with a provider you may be inclined to get some money off, though this may take a little persuasion, depending on how loyal you have been as a customer. In some cases you will be able to find discounts through third party websites, as using this method you will be able to rate how good the claims service is against each provider.

When you first get through to a claims service helpline over the phone, you will probably be asked a series of questions, in which case, you will have to answer them with the up most accuracy. In the event of lying or bending the truth when making a insurance claim, it could in fact mean that claim being rejected. In some business insurance cases you may have a set price of which you are owed by the insurance company in the event of a claim, this can often go for business contents insurance, if for instance you insure a set amount of computers in your company office. Remember that each claim may be processed slightly differently, and each company may have a different system behind that claims service, but ultimately it should result in you gaining back your items.

Forwarding a Claim

If there are other people signed into the contract of which you are making a claim on, they may be required to answer similar questions on the phone as you may have just done. Make sure that you answer the questions accurately, and that you check to see whether you are owed back a set amount of money when making a claim, or whether the amount of money owed is arguable, and therefore ambiguous. In some cases where there is a disagreement between the provider and the parties signed into a policy with an insurance company, you may have to take the claim to court, or phone the office of fair trading.

When you enable other parties to get involved in the claim outside of the provider/ party relationship, you are in fact taking a risk. This risk is relatively necessary depending on your current circumstances and whether or not you think you have a case. In some cases where you have not kept up to date with premiums, you may find it a little more difficult to gain back the full amount of money that you are owed. Make sure you keep up to date with payments to ensure the claim goes through legitimately.
